The twigs are very long, thread-like and bright green, similar to those of horsetails. On the lower part of the plant the leaves are very long and fine; on the upper part they are reduced to small elongated scales. Depending on the temperature of the area, it may lose its foliage in winter. From April to mid-autumn it produces small, bright red tubular flowers without pause. They are two to three centimetres long and open only slightly at the tip into five rounded lobes. Their nectar attracts butterflies and bees. This plant makes it possible to introduce movement into the garden through striking, very light cascades of colour. This quality, together with its low maintenance requirements, its fast growth and its tolerance of sea air, wind and calcareous ground, has multiplied its presence in Mediterranean gardens.
